Proof of Art
Inside the record behind an NEC Digital Art Collectible.
The artwork comes first. But its history doesn’t have to rely on trust alone.
What does “proof” actually mean?
A record that can be checked — not just believed.
For an NEC Digital Art Collectible, proof begins with evidence.
The artwork, its edition, its creator and the important records associated with it are identified in ways that can later be checked.
Some of that evidence is human-readable — names, dates, edition information and collector terms. Other parts are machine-verifiable, using digital fingerprints and independent records.
Together, they create something more useful than a claim of authenticity: a trail that can be examined.
Trust is useful. Evidence is better.
SHA-256 — a fingerprint for a file.
Change the file. Change the fingerprint.
When an important file forms part of an NEC Digital Art Collectible, a SHA-256 digital fingerprint can be created from that file.
SHA-256 reads the file and produces a unique-looking 64-character record based on its contents. If the file remains exactly the same, it produces the same fingerprint again. Change even a tiny part of the file and the fingerprint changes.
That gives us a practical way to check a file later. The file can be fingerprinted again and the result compared with the fingerprint recorded when the collectible was created.
If the two match, there is strong evidence that the file being checked is exactly the same digital file that was originally recorded.
SHA-256 does not prove who created an artwork. It proves whether a particular file has changed.
That is why the fingerprint is only one part of the NEC record. Identity, edition information, provenance and collector terms provide the context around it.
Same file. Same fingerprint. Change the file, change the fingerprint.
Where does the record live?
Not in just one place.
An NEC Digital Art Collectible is designed so that its provenance does not depend entirely on the Nathaly Ellen Celia website — or on any single marketplace, platform or company remaining online.
The collectible’s technical record can combine several different forms of evidence. Some information may be recorded on a blockchain. Important digital files can be identified by cryptographic fingerprints. Supporting records can also be preserved independently of the marketplace through which a collectible may be viewed or transferred.
These records do different jobs.
The blockchain can provide a durable record of the collector edition and its ownership history. Cryptographic fingerprints can identify the exact files associated with the artwork. Independent preserved records can carry the supporting information that gives those identifiers meaning — the artwork, edition, provenance, licence and related documentation.
No single part needs to tell the whole story.
The strength comes from the records agreeing with one another.
What is actually on the blockchain?
Not the artwork pretending to be a database entry. The record that identifies it.
When an NEC Digital Art Collectible is issued on-chain, the blockchain provides a permanent reference point for that specific collector edition.
Depending on the record, this can include identifiers such as the smart contract, token ID, ownership and transfer history, and a reference to the metadata associated with the collectible.
The artwork file itself does not need to be stored directly inside the blockchain. A blockchain is extremely good at preserving small, verifiable records. It is not intended to behave like an ordinary file-storage system.
Instead, the on-chain record can point towards the information needed to identify the collectible, while cryptographic fingerprints and independently preserved records help verify the files and documentation associated with it.
That distinction matters.
The blockchain records the collectible. It does not replace the artwork.
So how does the blockchain know what belongs to what?
Metadata connects the record to the artwork.
A blockchain record can identify a particular NEC Digital Art Collectible, but it also needs information describing what that record relates to.
That information is called metadata.
For an NEC Digital Art Collectible, the metadata can identify details such as the artwork title, edition, creator, collector licence and references to the digital files and supporting provenance records.
It acts as a machine-readable map between the blockchain entry and the wider record surrounding the artwork.
The important point is that metadata is not the artwork itself. It is structured information that helps systems — and people — understand what the blockchain record represents.
The blockchain provides the reference. The metadata tells you what the reference means.
So where does the artwork actually live?
Usually, not on the blockchain.
The blockchain record does not need to contain the entire artwork file.
Instead, it can contain or reference information that helps identify the collectible and connect it to records and files stored elsewhere.
For NEC Digital Art Collectibles, the aim is not to depend on one ordinary website or one company’s server. Important files and records can be preserved using independent systems designed to preserve, identify and retrieve digital information.
Two of the systems used within the NEC approach are Arweave and IPFS.
They work differently, but both allow digital material to be identified in ways that are not dependent on its filename or its position inside a conventional website.
The original master files and supporting records can also exist independently within the artist’s archive.
This creates several routes back to the evidence rather than asking one service to carry the entire history of the collectible.
The blockchain does not need to hold the artwork. It needs to help you find the right one.
Arweave and IPFS — same file, different logic.
One is built around permanence. The other is built around content.
IPFS — the InterPlanetary File System — does not identify a file by asking where it is stored.
It identifies content by what the content actually is.
When digital material is added to IPFS, it can be given a Content Identifier, or CID, derived from the content itself. Change the content and the identifier changes too.
That makes a CID useful for pointing to a particular version of a file and checking that the content being retrieved is the content that was originally identified.
But IPFS does not, by itself, promise that somebody will keep storing that content forever. Continued availability depends on the material being retained — or “pinned” — by participating systems.
That distinction matters.
Arweave approaches the problem differently.
Arweave is a blockchain-based network designed specifically for long-term digital storage.
Rather than simply providing an address for content, data submitted to Arweave becomes part of a network built around preserving information over time.
Its economic and technical design is intended to support long-term storage without requiring the creator or collector continually to maintain an ordinary website or storage account.
Within the NEC approach, these technologies can therefore perform different jobs.
IPFS can provide a content-based identifier for exact digital material.
Arweave can provide another independently maintained route to preserved information.
The artist’s own archive provides another.
And the blockchain record can connect those pieces together.
Different systems. Same evidence. Fewer single points of failure.
What exactly is written on the blockchain?
Not the artwork. The record that identifies it.
The blockchain is not being used as a giant hard drive for the artwork.
Instead, it provides a public record through which a particular NEC Digital Art Collectible can be identified and its ownership history followed.
For an NEC Digital Art Collectible, that record can include several important pieces of information.
The smart contract
The contract establishes the rules under which the collectible exists and can be issued or transferred.
The contract address
Every deployed smart contract has its own blockchain address. This identifies the particular contract responsible for the collectible.
The token ID
Within that contract, each collectible has an identifying number. The combination of the contract address and token ID identifies that particular blockchain asset.
The owner
The blockchain records which wallet currently controls the collectible. When ownership changes through a blockchain transfer, that change becomes part of the public transaction record.
The token URI
The token can contain a reference pointing to its metadata — structured information describing the collectible and connecting it to supporting material.
The transaction history
Transfers and other relevant interactions with the contract create blockchain transactions that can be independently examined.
None of these things is the artwork itself.
They are identifiers, references and records surrounding it.
The artwork, its cryptographic fingerprints, metadata, licence, provenance documentation and blockchain record perform different jobs. Together, they make it possible to follow the evidence rather than relying on a single database, marketplace or company to tell the story.
The blockchain does not make the artwork authentic. It makes part of the evidence difficult to rewrite.
So what is actually permanent?
Permanence is not one thing.
No digital system should be treated as magically indestructible.
The NEC approach therefore does not ask one technology, company or storage location to preserve everything.
Different parts of the record are preserved in different ways.
The blockchain record
Provides a durable public history of the collectible, including identifiers and transactions recorded on-chain.
Arweave
Is used as a long-term preservation route for important digital material and records. Its purpose within the NEC architecture is persistence rather than ordinary website hosting.
IPFS
Uses content-based addressing. Instead of identifying a file only by where it is stored, its address is derived from the content itself. If the content changes, the identifier changes.
The artist’s archive
Original master files, cryptographic fingerprints and supporting documentation are also retained independently within the artist’s own records.
None of those systems is being asked to do everything.
The blockchain is good at maintaining a public sequence of records. Cryptographic fingerprints are good at identifying exact digital content. Distributed preservation systems can provide additional routes to stored material. The artist’s archive preserves the original source material and documentation.
Together, they provide redundancy.
If one website disappears, the provenance should not disappear with it. If one marketplace closes, the collectible should not lose its identity. If one storage route becomes unavailable, other evidence should remain.
Permanence is a system, not a location.
So how would you actually verify one?
Follow the evidence.
For somebody technically minded, the useful question is not whether a collectible claims to be authentic.
It is whether the evidence can be followed.
An NEC Digital Art Collectible can provide several points that may be checked independently: the blockchain record, the metadata associated with it, cryptographic fingerprints of important files, preserved records and the artist’s supporting documentation.
A verifier can therefore work backwards.
The blockchain can identify the collectible and point towards its associated record.
The metadata can describe the artwork, edition and supporting material.
Cryptographic fingerprints can be compared with files presented as the recorded originals.
Preserved records can provide further evidence independently of the website or marketplace through which the collectible happens to be viewed.
The artist’s archive provides another point of comparison against the original source material and documentation.
Verification means following the links between the evidence.
Do not ask one record to prove everything. Ask whether the records agree.
What happens when the collector changes?
The artwork stays the same. The provenance continues.
When an NEC Digital Art Collectible changes hands, the history of the collectible does not begin again.
The existing record remains part of its provenance. A new ownership event is added to that history rather than replacing what came before.
Where ownership is recorded on-chain, the blockchain can provide a public sequence of transfers between addresses. The earlier transactions remain visible alongside the later ones.
But ownership history is only one part of the record.
The artwork, its edition information, cryptographic fingerprints, licence and supporting documentation still provide the evidence that identifies what was transferred.
A new collector should inherit the collectible’s history — not erase it.
What if a marketplace disappears?
The storefront can disappear. The record should not.
A marketplace is a way to view, buy or transfer a collectible. It is not intended to be the only place where the collectible’s identity or history exists.
An NEC Digital Art Collectible is designed so that important parts of its record can exist independently of any single marketplace. The blockchain can provide a continuing public record of the collectible and its ownership history, while supporting files and documentation can be preserved through separate systems.
This means that if one marketplace closes, changes its service or stops displaying the collectible, the underlying evidence does not have to disappear with it.
The token can still be identified through its blockchain contract and token ID. Its associated metadata can point towards the artwork and supporting records, while cryptographic fingerprints can be used to check important files against the versions originally recorded.
A different compatible interface can potentially be used to read the same blockchain record. The marketplace is therefore an access point — not the collectible itself.
The marketplace is temporary infrastructure. The provenance is designed to outlive it.
So can somebody just copy it?
The file can be copied. Its history cannot simply be inherited.
An image or digital file can be copied, downloaded or displayed elsewhere. Blockchain technology does not pretend to prevent that.
In fact, an exact copy of a file can have the same cryptographic fingerprint because the digital content itself is identical.
What the copy does not automatically acquire is the recorded history surrounding the NEC Digital Art Collectible — its contract, token ID, ownership history, edition information, collector terms and supporting provenance.
Those records provide the context needed to distinguish the recognised collector edition from an ordinary copy of the same digital material.
The fingerprint answers “is this the same file?” The provenance answers “what is this file?”
Copying the image does not copy the provenance.
What exactly does the collector own?
Ownership is specific. Copyright is separate.
When an NEC Digital Art Collectible is acquired, the collector owns the specific collector edition represented by its digital record.
On the blockchain, control of that collectible is associated with the wallet that holds its token. The ownership history can therefore continue from one collector to another without altering the identity of the original artwork or edition.
But ownership of the collectible does not mean ownership of the artist’s copyright.
The artwork remains the intellectual property of Nathaly Ellen Celia. The collector receives the rights described in the collector licence accompanying that particular edition.
That distinction is deliberate.
Owning the collectible establishes which edition is yours.
The licence establishes what you are permitted to do with it.
The copyright establishes who owns the underlying creative work.
The collectible can change hands. The authorship does not.
So what is the smart contract actually doing?
Rules written into the collectible.
A smart contract is a program stored on a blockchain.
For an NEC Digital Art Collectible, it provides the underlying rules that allow the collectible to exist as a distinct blockchain asset.
It can define things such as how the collectible is created, how ownership is recorded and how it may move from one blockchain address to another.
Once deployed, those rules are not simply instructions sitting on the Nathaly Ellen Celia website. They exist independently on the blockchain.
That is important because the collectible should not depend upon somebody remembering what its rules were supposed to be.
The contract provides something that can be inspected.
The website explains the collectible. The smart contract executes its rules.
And where does the licence fit?
The blockchain records ownership. The licence defines what that ownership means.
The smart contract can identify the collectible and record changes in ownership. It does not transfer the artist’s copyright.
For NEC Digital Art Collectibles, the rights accompanying lawful ownership are defined separately by the NEC Collector Licence — NEC-DCL-COLLECTOR-1.0.
The licence establishes what the collector may do with the associated digital artwork, what rights remain with Nathaly Ellen Celia, and what happens to those rights when the collectible changes hands.
When lawful ownership transfers, the previous collector’s licence rights terminate and the new lawful collector becomes eligible to exercise them.
This means the technical record and the legal terms perform different jobs — but they are designed to work together.
The blockchain can record who owns the collectible. The licence tells that owner what ownership permits.
Can the licence itself change?
Versions may evolve. Existing terms should not quietly disappear.
An NEC Collector Licence is identified by its own version number.
For example, the current licence is NEC-DCL-COLLECTOR-1.0.
Future versions may be created as NEC Digital Art Collectibles develops, laws change or additional types of collector rights are introduced.
But a new version should not simply rewrite the licence already associated with an existing collectible.
The record surrounding a collectible should identify the licence version connected with it, allowing a collector — including a future collector — to determine which terms apply.
If different terms are subsequently agreed, that change should itself be documented rather than silently replacing the earlier record.
The licence can evolve. The record should always show which version governs.
What can change — and what cannot?
History can grow. It should not be rewritten.
An NEC Digital Art Collectible contains different kinds of information, and they do not all behave in the same way.
Some facts describe events that have already happened — the creation of the collectible, its contract, token ID, ownership transfers and the cryptographic fingerprints of important files.
Those records form part of its history.
Other information may legitimately develop over time. A licence may receive a new version. Additional preservation records may be created. New technical routes may be added to make existing evidence easier to find or verify.
But adding something new should not require pretending that the earlier record never existed.
A new record should extend the history — not overwrite it.
This is why version numbers, dates, identifiers and cryptographic fingerprints matter. They allow somebody examining the collectible later to distinguish between what existed originally and what was added afterwards.
If a future collector wants to know which licence governed a particular edition, which file was originally recorded or which ownership event occurred first, the answer should be recoverable from the evidence.
Change should leave a trail.
Can the smart contract itself change?
Changing the record is not the same as changing the rules.
A smart contract is a program deployed to a blockchain. Once deployed, what can and cannot subsequently change depends upon how that particular contract was designed.
Some smart contracts are deliberately built so that their underlying logic can later be upgraded. Others are designed so that the deployed code itself remains fixed.
There is another distinction that matters.
A contract can allow particular information to change without its underlying program being rewritten. Ownership, for example, may legitimately move from one blockchain address to another. Those changes become new events in the history of the collectible.
That is not the same thing as replacing the contract that defines the rules.
For NEC Digital Art Collectibles, the blockchain is only one component of the provenance architecture.
The contract records blockchain activity associated with the collectible, while the wider evidence — including cryptographic fingerprints, metadata, licence information, preserved records and the artist’s archive — provides additional points against which that history can be examined.
If a future technical development ever requires a different contract, protocol or blockchain arrangement, the existing history should not simply be rewritten as though the earlier system never existed.
A later system should be documented as a later event.
Technology can change. History should accumulate.
What does “permanent” actually mean?
Not indestructible. Designed to survive change.
Nothing digital should be described as magically indestructible.
Websites can disappear. Companies can close. Storage systems can change. Technologies can be replaced, upgraded or abandoned.
For an NEC Digital Art Collectible, permanence therefore does not mean relying upon one website, one company, one blockchain or one storage location forever.
It means designing the record so that no single point has to carry the entire history.
Important information can exist through different forms of evidence: the blockchain record, cryptographic fingerprints, preserved digital files, metadata, licence information, provenance records and the artist’s own archive.
These systems perform different jobs.
If one route becomes unavailable, other parts of the evidence can still help identify the collectible, verify important files and reconstruct its recorded history.
And if the technology itself eventually changes, that change should become another documented event in the provenance rather than silently replacing what came before.
The goal is not to freeze technology in time.
The goal is to make the history increasingly difficult to lose.
Permanence is not one place surviving forever. It is the evidence surviving the places.
What happens if something goes wrong?
Failure should be survivable.
Digital systems are not infallible.
Websites can disappear. Companies can close. Storage services can change. Links can fail. Software can become obsolete.
An NEC Digital Art Collectible is designed with that reality in mind.
Its provenance does not depend upon every part of the system remaining available forever. Different records preserve different pieces of the evidence, so the loss of one route should not automatically destroy the history of the collectible.
If an important digital file needs to be checked, its cryptographic fingerprint can be compared with the fingerprint originally recorded.
If a website or marketplace becomes unavailable, other preserved records may still identify the artwork, edition, ownership history, licence and supporting documentation.
If one storage route disappears, another preserved copy may still provide the material needed to reconstruct or verify the record.
There is, however, an important distinction.
A collector is responsible for protecting access to any private wallet or credentials under their control. A lost private key cannot simply be recreated by the artist, a marketplace or the blockchain.
The provenance record may still exist even when access to a particular wallet has been lost.
The system is designed to fail in parts without losing the whole story.
So what are you actually trusting?
As little as possible.
No provenance system can remove trust completely.
The aim of the NEC Digital Art Collectibles approach is to reduce how much of the story has to be accepted simply because somebody says it is true.
The artwork, collector edition, blockchain record, cryptographic fingerprints, metadata, licence information and preserved supporting records can provide different pieces of evidence.
Those pieces can be compared.
If one source disappears, another may remain. If something changes, the surviving evidence may help reveal that change.
No single website, marketplace, company or database is intended to become the sole authority for the collectible’s history.
There will always be things that begin with the artist: the creation of the artwork, the decision to release it, and the original information recorded about it.
But once that information forms part of the provenance structure, the intention is that future collectors should not have to depend entirely upon the artist continuing to be present to confirm it.
The evidence should increasingly be able to speak for itself.
That is the point of the architecture.
Not to make the artwork complicated.
Not to make technology the centre of the experience.
Not to replace judgement.
It is simply to make the history surrounding a digital artwork harder to lose, harder to confuse and harder to rewrite without leaving evidence behind.
You should not have to believe the story because we tell it well.
You should be able to follow the evidence.
